An interdisciplinary conference in August 2018: Religious Encounters and Polemics in Late Antiquity: Boundaries, Conversions and Persuasion
The first international conference sponsored by the Polin Institute was held at Åbo Akademi University on August 23rd-24th, 2018.
The conference ”Religious Polemics and Encounters in Late Antiquity: Boundaries, Conversions and Persuasion” focused on religious polemics and encounters in Late Antiquity with special interest in religious minorities.
The purpose of the conference was to study polemical relations between religious groups in Late Antiquity from the perspective of encounters as they are expressed in ancient literary sources. A special emphasis was made on the social need for encounters as well as the rhetorical way to present the religious polemics.
The participants were experts from The University of Leuven, Belgium, Åbo Akademi University, Helsinki University, and The University of Eastern Finland. They share an interest in Late Antiquity, but they represent different backgrounds: Patristics, Classical Philology, News Testament Exegetics and Old Testament Exegetics as well as Judaic studies. Even some doctoral students from Leuven and Åbo presented their papers in the conference.
The contributions will be published in the series “Studies on the Children of Abraham” (Leiden: Brill).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
